The Gubby Archives - Thoughts - We don't have to say we're sorry.
We don't have to say we're sorry.

Polititians always lie. Countries invade each other and people kill each other in wars seemly without reason. We're polluting our planet. Multinationals like Nestlé and Coca-Cola will do seemingly anything for profit, and morals aren't a factor.

We should be ashamed. Right?

No. Fuck shame. I recognise that there are many evils in the world but I want to point this out: we don't have to be ashamed of them. No-one has a right to shame us about them. Did WE, I mean, you, me, and our friends, cause these wars? Did we exploit the mothers in the third world? Did we cause the pollution? I mean, yes, we could stop driving cars or buying products and live the lives of ascetic hermits in order to do our part for the environment, but is that realistic?

It's not us. You might say that it's those few who really do care more about money and power than people, and it's partly that, but most of all, I think it's the system. Companies like Nestlé only survive if they make the most profit; if they are too soft, a competitor takes their place. Natural selection. People in management positions only make their job and keep their job if they care more about money than people. Natural selection.

Individuals not want to fight a war or take part in their company's unethical practices, but they can't single themselves out by speaking up, or they'll lose their job or their life. Concievably they could ALL be Good People who care but they don't speak up, and I expect it's not so far from that, in fact.

And finally, if we don't know what is right, what can we do? Things aren't black and white. There will always be a bad side of a decision to complain about, but if the other decision was taken, they'd complain too. And no-one knows everything. Sometimes we're really fumbling in the dark.

I'm not saying that the State of the World is any better now that we've established these ideas, I'm just saying we don't have to say we're sorry.
